The Regions Hospital Expansion project is one the largest construction projects in the history of downtown St. Paul and we are honored to be a part of it. As the pan and joist concrete frame rose from 2 stories below grade to 12 stories above, NCM placed over 38,000 cu. yds. of concrete for the 600,000sf structure. Kraus Anderson, the general contractor, selected NCM to complete the critical structural portion of the project because of our history of quality performance with them. Our dedication to the project showed in the many hours of pre-planning, pricing, and scheduling by our project management team. Faced with many challenges, including the owner decision to add another level after construction started, NCM completed its scope of work ahead of the original schedule.

Ivy Hotel & ResidencesMinneapolis, MN

  • Mat Slab Foundation
  • Post-Tensioned Slabs
The Ivy Hotel & Residences is a 400,000sf high-rise mixed-use project, comprised of two adjacent towers rising above 5 levels of subterranean parking. The 19-story hotel tower houses 136 guestrooms, while the 26-story condominium tower boasts 92 luxury residences. Both towers are post-tensioned flat plate concrete frames, while parking levels are conventionally reinforced. The level at grade presented additional challenges as the structure layout transitioned from living space to parking. NCM worked closely with their subcontractors and suppliers to coordinate the construction of this transfer level. The entire structure sits on a mass concrete mat slab that contains a monumental 2,400 cu. yds. of concrete, which NCM completed in a single pour.

Parking Structures

Calhoun Square Parking RampMinneapolis, MN

  • Post-Tension Demolition
  • Post-Tensioned Slabs
NCM is ready to tackle challenging projects with innovative ideas. The partial demolition and vertical expansion of the Calhoun Square parking structure showcases the many talents of NCM. Uptown is a dense urban area of Minneapolis with limited space for retail and parking. The owners of Calhoun Square desired increased parking space, while reducing their parking ramp’s footprint to allow for future adjacent retail expansion. The final design called for the shortening of the existing parking ramp by one bay and expanding the ramp vertically with two levels of new construction. In order to reduce the ramp’s footprint by one bay, the structural design required the demolition of two bays of the post-tensioned concrete beam and slab frame. The desired overall length was then achieved by re-constructing the end bay. Developing a sequencing plan that was both practical and safe was critical to the project’s successful partial demolition. The NCM team worked closely with the structural engineer and post-tensioning supplier to coordinate key items such as shoring, tendon de-stressing locations, and field splices. After completing the demolition phase, NCM re-constructed the end bay and began the vertical expansion of the parking structure. NCM met the demanding challenges of this project with innovative ideas and completed it ahead of schedule.

US Bank / Vikings StadiumMinneapolis, MN

  • Masonry Block
NCM is very proud to have participated in one of the largest and the newest NFL stadium projects to date. Our scope of work on the one billion dollar project included 410,000 masonry blocks dispersed across 8 levels and 6 masonry stair shafts each 140 feet tall! With an average crew size of 30 workers, NCM successfully completed their scope of work within 18 months. Dozens of other subcontractors working within the project, and at times with nearly 1000 workers, Northland led the way demonstrating teamwork and safety while meeting the challenging schedule. Here’s what Mortenson’s head Superintendent, Dave Mansell had to say...“Northland's performance on the masonry at the US Bank Stadium was exceptional. Their attention to safety, quality and schedule on a fast track, complex, difficult job was second to none! I look forward to the opportunity of our next job together.”

  • CMU Walls
NCM is proud to have been the masonry contractor for the University of Minnesota Golden Gopher football team. To have the stadium ready for the opening kick-off for the Fall 2009 season, M.A. Mortenson solicited a challenging schedule with stringent criteria. Few masonry contractors could compete with the capabilities of NCM to install approximately 600,000 CMU, 30,000sf of architectural precast, 300,000 utility brick, and place 2,750 cu. yds. of grout in a time frame of 10 months. Impressively, NCM exceeded everyone’s expectations by completing 90% of their scope of work in only 4 months. This accomplishment came through months of pre-planning, dedication from the onsite foreman and the skilled labor of over 100 men and women on the crew. The end result is a stadium with many masonry architectural features, including a noteworthy 50ft tall Monument Wall wrapping the entire perimeter to welcome the Gopher fans.
